AutoGuide Reviews the 2017 Ford F-150, Gives a Big Thumbs-Up to New 10-Speed Automatic Transmission

As AutoGuide writer Stephen Elmer notes in his new review of the 2017 Ford F-150, Ford has been betting big on new manufacturing materials and engine technology, with very good results.

Two years ago, the F-150 was fully redesigned with lightweight, high-strength aluminum body paneling that actually increased towing and hauling capability by reducing overall truck weight, and new EcoBoost engine options. For this year, the 2017 F-150 is available with either of two new, second-generation EcoBoost engines, and it also features a brand-new 10-speed automatic transmission.

AutoGuide expressed initial concern that the addition of additional speeds, and the technology needed to manage performance and shift points, could prove cumbersome. But AutoGuide's Elmer reports the 10-speed transmission is silky smooth, and does an excellent job at maintaining power in lower gears when needed, and upshifting whenever there is an opportunity to enhance fuel efficiency.

The 2017 F-150 actually comes with four engine options, not including the special engine designed for the off-roading F-150 Raptor. The base engine is a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 283 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. For a big performance boost, there's a twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine that's available in 2.7-liter and 3.5-liter versions.

The 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost makes 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque, while delivering EPA-rated fuel economy of 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway with rear-wheel drive and 18 mpg city/23 mpg highway with available four-wheel drive. The larger 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 pumps out 365 horsepower and an impressive 420 pound-feet of torque, while still achieving an EPA fuel economy rating of 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway (rear-wheel) or 18 mpg city/23 mpg highway (four-wheel). The fourth option is a big 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine; it puts out 385 horsepower and 387 pound-feet of torque.

The F-150 continues to be available in a broad range of configurations, with three cab styles, three bed-lengths and six different trim levels. The cabin finish can range from the very basis ST model to the very luxurious F-150 Platinum edition, which includes premium leather upholstery, automatic climate control, heated and ventilated power-adjustable seats, remote engine start, a panoramic sunroof, Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen display and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a high-end 11-speaker Sony audio system.
